You just break a piece off and use the flat edge, adjusting the pressure to get a darker mark. It's a lot more eye-to-page than a pencil is, in my opinion. Perhaps even warranting its own post... I actually really like both of them, but I do see what you're saying about the one at the top. I'll have to look into getting a lithography crayon...though I bet I won't know what to do with it.
