Art & Money: What?
Does it seem like anyone can make money making art- except for you? Do you wonder how every hobby artist has professional personal webpages, but you can’t figure out where to start? Do you look at all the options to show your work online- and are paralyzed, because you don’t know what one is right for you?
That’s how I used to feel. After reading Chris Guillebeau & Zoe Westhof’s “Art and Money: How to Thrive as An Artist Without Selling out,” I felt really inspired to market my art online- not in a way that took me away from my artistic practice, but in a way that invigorated it- the guide teaches relationship building, and in expanding your online network, your potential market and audience for your art is dramatically increased. This is without the endless rejection- because the people seeing it have chosen to look at it!
One of the great things about it, is unlike books from Chapters or the library, is once you have “Art and Money” you get three MP3 audio interviews with artists who actually make money, a PDF transcripts of each audio interview, and continuing email updates. I would buy “Art and Money” for the email updates alone- the most recent one talked about how to use email to build your community. The time and effort it would take to figure this out alone? Good luck.
The traditional model for becoming a successful artist? I’ll be famous when I’m dead. You only get one shot at that, so if the wrong person comes across your life’s work, it could end up being thrown out instead of being published. Or, to send your work out to galleries and hope a random curator will like it. Or, you have to jump on whatever’s currently in vogue: pop art, cubism, abstract. If you’re ahead of your time? Better wait till you die.
Let’s not do that!
Utilizing “Art and Money” puts the control back in our hands: instead of being finished with our work as it leaves the easel, we maintain complete control in how and where it’s presented, and can create our own fanbase. We don’t have to watch our art walk out the door, never to be seen again- you can create work that sells itself over and over and over again. You can talk to other artists, lift that creative block, and learn from each other. We can sell our works of art at the price they’re worth.
“Art and Money” is for every artist that wants to be an artist after art school, who wants to quit their cubicle job and follow their dream. It is not for the hobby artist who doesn’t want anyone to see their work, for anyone who hates to let go of their work. But honestly, why would we make it if not to share?
